Instructions to make Nuchin unde steamed lentil dumplings:
- Soak the dal for two to three hours.I have used fresh toor dal seeds instead of soaked toor dal since it’s seasonally available.
- After three to four hours grind coarsely the dal also nicely grind the green chilli ginger coriander curry leaves separately.
- Now add grated coconut dill leaves the ground masala and dal together.
- Mix it well and steam it in an idli plate for 10 min on high and 3 min on low flame
- Check with a tooth pick or fork if it comes out clean after poking the dumplings then it’s cooked well
- Serve this with ghee,hing oil, majjige Huli or coconut chutney.

I find that much against my will, my tummy growls louder and earlier than usual when its one of these dishes on my dining table. Nuchinna unde ( nucchu - broken bits ; unde - ball ) is basically steamed lentil dumplings which tastes almost like steamed masala vada / ambode.
