  1. Make ready 1/2 cup Spring Onion
  2. Take 1 Tomato

  7. Prepare 1/4 tsp Grated ginger
  8. Take 1 Tamarind - 1/4 size of gooseberry
  9. Take as per taste Salt
  10. Take 1 1/2 tbsp Oil
  11. Make ready 1/4 tsp Turmeric powder
  12. Take 1 pinch Hing
  13. Prepare 1 tbsp Oil
  14. Get for tempering :
  15. Take 1/4 tsp mustard seeds
  16. Get 1/4 tsp Fennel
  17. Take 1 bunch curry leaves

I adapted this recipe from tarla dalal's site. I made few changes in the original recipe. It was a nice combo for idli, dosa. I've given the variations for this chutney in ingredients list.

Steps to make Spring Onion Chutney:
  1. Chop the tomato. - Heat oil in a pan and then add Chana dal and roast the same.
  2. Now Add the tomatoes, coconut, tamarind, garlic, ginger and dried chillies, one by one, saute well until golden brown.
  3. Add the spring onion and saute until lightly browned. - Then add salt, hing, turmeric powder and saute in a low flame for 5 minutes.
  4. Once the mixture cools down,  grind in a mixer jar.
  5. Heat oil in a pan and then add mustard, fennel and curry leaves.
  6. Spring onion chutney ready.

It was a nice combo for idli, dosa. I've given the variations for this chutney in ingredients list. This chutney is very versatile as it can be used as a spread, dip and goes well with idli and dosa.
